Argumentative Writing

In class we have been learning about argument writing or persuasive writing.  Here is my argument.

The NZ Flag Debate

I firmly believe that New Zealand’s flag shouldn't change.  We have had the same flag for over a century, why change it now?  Firstly it will be disrespectful to all the military and soldiers that gave their lives under that flag.   Secondly it would cost millions of dollars.  Finally only a small percentage of NZ want to change the flag.

Changing the flag would cost New Zealand billions of dollars.  That money would be better spent on preventing child poverty.  There are children that go to school hungry, their health and education is more important than changing the flag?  There are families living in inadequate houses and they are getting sick because of the poor quality of homes.  I think the money would rather be spent on either of these things instead of changing the flag.

Hundreds of thousands of soldiers have died under our current flag, to change it now would be disrespectful to those soldiers and their families.

If only a small percentage of NZ want to change it why should we put the effort in?  At the first meeting about the flag only thirteen people showed up, this proves that only a few people care.

I firmly believe that we should not change the flag.  The Union Jack shows that we are part of the British commonwealth, the southern cross shows where we live in the world, this flag represents us, why change it?
